Red-light therapy is having a moment lately. That isn’t surprising considering that it’s a non-invasive, painless, and easy-to-administer therapy which claims so many fantastic benefits you would think it was something out of science fiction.
Lately, one red light therapy device in particular has been getting a lot of attention — the Joovv Red Light Therapy Device. We wanted to take a closer look at these devices and see what the fuss is about.
What Is Red-Light Therapy?
Red-light therapy involves exposing an area of the body for five to 15 minutes each day to natural red and near-infrared light from medical-grade LEDs. This variant of light lacks the heat or harmful UV rays that can cause sun damage. The theory is, these wavelengths of light penetrate the skin (harmlessly) and are absorbed by cells, where they boost the mitochondria, which as any high-schooler who’s taken basic biology can tell you, is the powerhouse of the cell. The revved-up mitochondria then crank out more energy-stimulating adenosine triosphate (ATP), which in turn gets the cells busily working on repairing and rejuvenating all kinds of tissues throughout your body.
Like a lot of new personal beauty products and medspa trends, that might sound too good to be true. However, preliminary studies are really encouraging. Red-light therapy has been shown to significantly reduce healing time for wounds and cuts. That’s why many pro athletes have been increasingly turning to Joovv-like devices for training and rapid muscle recovery. Likewise, natural-health practitioners now employ red-light therapy for relief from chronic pain and arthritis, and high-end spas increasingly offer it for skincare, collagen density and acne treatment.

The name making the most waves in the red-light therapy boomlet is Joovv, which offers home devices both great and small. The smallest and most accessible is the Joovv Mini, available for $695. No, not cheap, unless you consider the fact that their larger setups run into the thousands of dollars. But with such touted benefits as inflammation and pain relief, skin rejuvenation, migraine prevention, acne control, collagen production, muscle recovery, sleep improvement, overcoming Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and even boosting your sex drive, it’s easy to see why people are increasingly bringing red-light devices into their homes.
Joovv points to literally thousands of peer-reviewed medical studies backing their claims. And they do have devoted practitioners among professional athletes, actors and models and top estheticians. The studies are preliminary, yes, but so far nobody has claimed any negative side effects or harm. If you have the money to spend and the desire to improve your health and performance, you still have time to be an early passenger on what may be one of the biggest wellness bandwagons we’ve seen in years.
Joovv was the first company to offer medical-grade red light therapy devices, starting in 2016. The Mini, their smallest device, is designed for targeted treatments of specific areas of the body, like your face, joints or sore muscles. As self-improvement devices aimed at healthy living go, we haven’t encountered one which promises so many beneficial results across such a range of issues. This time, the red light means go.
With a nearly $700 price tag, this light therapy device isn’t designed for the casual athlete. However, if you’re an early adopter looking for a natural way to treat sore muscles, acne and tired skin, the Joovv will put you squarely on the cutting edge of personal wellness.
